Accurate and Reliable Position

Integrating precision localization into a vehicle’s navigation system builds significant value for the vehicle operator. If the navigation system is aware of the specific lane the vehicle is in, guidance for lane selection and lane changes occurs in sufficient time that the driver can safely and slowly merge to the necessary lane. Often lane boundaries are difficult to determine visually – cameras are confused by variations in lighting and environment, for example night, fog, and rain. As lane markings wear away, fade, or are removed the lane boundaries are challenging to identify. Humans learn over many years how to navigate this. When using a separate information source – satellites and reference stations – the need to visually identify lanes is replaced with a map of lane borders and knowledge of a vehicle’s relative position.
